Mary Kennedy helps Launch of AMD Awareness Week 2015

One in ten people in Ireland over the age of 50 have AMD.

The ‘Your Defining Moment’ campaign for AMD Awareness Week 2015, which takes place from Monday 14th – Sunday 20th September, is highlighting how AMD can impact a person’s life and is encouraging people to protect their eyesight with regular eye tests.

As part of the campaign, the public, particularly those over 50, were encouraged to think about a time when they made a decision or a choice that led to a positive outcome they were not necessarily expecting, but which defined or had a very positive impact on their lives afterwards. A number of celebrity ambassadors have added their ‘defining moments’ to the campaign, including TD Mary Mitchell O’Connor; RTE’s Mary Kennedy; and Evelyn Cusack. The stories have been compiled into a special booklet, which was launched during AMD Awareness Week 2015 on September 15th.
This year’s event focuses on ‘Your Defining Moment’, supported by Fighting Blindness, NCBI – the national sight loss organisation, the Irish College of Ophthalmologists (ICO), the Association of Optometrists Ireland (AOI), and Novartis. The ‘Your Defining Moment’ eye health awareness campaign aims to highlight the positive impact, and health-defining potential, of testing for AMD.

A dedicated Novartis mobile testing unit will offer free AMD testing in various locations nationwide for AMD Awareness Week. The mobile unit will visit Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford between Tuesday 15th and Saturday 19th of September offering free AMD eye testing and information to the general public. Free AMD testing will also be available in participating optometrists nationwide.
